A nontraditional family with a complicated history finds that the past returns for a creepy second act in this haunting Japanese mystery. At first glance, the clan at the heart of the tale seems happy and well-adjusted - with a kind, loving mother; a kind, loving father; and two children. But in truth, one of the children, Haru, is illegitimate - the product of his mother's pregnancy at the hands of a brutal rapist. The parents responded to these events by raising Haru as a normal member of the family, but when Haru and his brother Izumi grow up, a bizarre series of events transpires: a serial arsonist begins setting fires and leaving behind clues at the crime scenes that seem tied, in some strange and oblique way, to the family. Izumi thus determines to solve the mystery, and the answer sheds an arresting light on the roles played by genetics versus familial guidance in raising children.
